Handwriting Instruction

Our aim is for every child to become a confident and skilled writer so that they can write clearly and accurately for a range of purposes with increasing proficiency. In order for this aim to be fulfilled, it is essential that handwriting is taught systematically ensuring children are able to form letters well, joined and of the correct size.

At St Philip's RC Primary School, we use the Read Write Inc. Handwriting Programme to provide a consistent, progressive approach to handwriting across the whole school. By closely linking handwriting to our successful Read Write Inc. Phonics programme, children develop letter formation, spelling and writing fluency alongside their early reading skills.

From Reception onwards, pupils are taught correct letter formation through a structured sequence that mirrors the sounds and letter patterns they learn in phonics. This ensures that children develop secure handwriting habits from the very beginning and gain confidence in applying these skills across all areas of the curriculum.

As children move through the school, they build on these foundations by developing accurate letter joins, improved presentation and increased writing speed and stamina. Our consistent approach enables children to produce neat, fluent handwriting that supports their communication and allows them to take pride in their work.

Through high-quality modelling, daily practice and clear expectations, we ensure that every child develops the handwriting skills needed to become successful, confident and independent writers.
