Religious Education
As a Catholic School, we believe that Religion is the core of the our curriculum, and more than an important subject, it underpins all that we are, and that we believe in as a school. Our school mission statement, 'Christ at the Centre', encompasses our belief as a school, that Christ is at the centre of everything that we think, do and believe in. It is vital for all children to know they are cared for and loved deeply by God and all staff at St Phillip’s.
At St. Philip’s, our Religion empowers our children to be active citizens, who are compassionate, ethically informed, happy and aspirational and who aim to not only improve themselves, but also the world in which they live. Religion inspires our children to strive to be the best they can be, and facilitates a thirst for knowledge, as they carefully link past, present and future to have a positive impact on the world around them. It enables pupils continually to deepen their religious and theological understanding and to communicate this effectively; the critical faculties of pupils so that they can relate their Catholic faith to daily life.
Our Curriculum
As a school located within the Diocese of Shrewsbury, we provide a curriculum for our children in line with the wishes of Bishop Mark. As part of this, we are currently journeying towards delivering the new directory, To Know you More Clearly. The outcome of this excellent religious education is religiously literate and consciously engaged young people who have the knowledge, understanding, and skills, appropriate to their age and capacity, to reflect spiritually, and think ethically and theologically, and who recognise the demands of religious commitment in everyday life. More information about this document can be found below along with our Curriculum Overview.
Outcomes
We assess throughout the topic completing both formative and summative assessments. This knowledge feeds into the teachers' planning to ensure we tailor the RE curriculum to meet all the needs of our children.
'I can' statements are included at the start of every topic and Key driver words are used for each topic to inform planning and assessment.
As directed by the Diocese, children are formally assessed three times a year. Topics 2, 4 and 6 will be assessed in the 2024/25 academic year. Outcomes at the end of Key Stage 2 in RE are in parity with our high outcomes in English and Maths with 75% of our Year 6 children achieving expected during the summer of 2024.
RSE
All Relationship, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) will be in accordance with the Church’s moral teaching. It will emphasise the central importance of marriage and the family whilst acknowledging that all pupils have a fundamental right to have their life respected whatever household they come from. It will also prepare pupils for life in modern Britain.
At St Philip's, we use a programme that follows the statutory guidance to include RSHE into our curriculum and meets the ethos of our Catholic identity and mission. To support the teaching of RSHE at St Philip's, we use ‘Life to the Full’; a Diocesan recommended resource.
