P.E.
Intent | At St Philip’s RC Primary School, we aim to inspire all children to develop a love of physical activity and sport. Through good physical education, whole school values and a whole child approach, we aim to nurture confident, resilient children who will strive for their personal best. We want to aid our children in obtaining the values and skills to celebrate and respect the success of others, as well as modestly celebrating their own successes. We aim to ensure that our delivery of physical education allows all children to have the skills, factual knowledge and then be able to apply this knowledge so that they leave our school with the capabilities to be successful in their sporting challenges and active lifestyles at High school and beyond. We strive to educate our children to develop a greater understanding on how to live healthy lifestyles and make healthy choices. We have links with local clubs and partnerships within our community to ensure the children and families receive the support and knowledge they need. |
Implementation | At St Philip’s, the PE lessons that are delivered encourage children to compete against themselves and others whilst being challenged to improve their social and emotional skills. Our talented PSP and Life Leisure coaching staff and school staff delivering the PE curriculum ensure that the objectives that are taught align with the National Curriculum, in order that all pupils: ● Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities which are inclusive to all. ● Are physically active for sustained periods of time ● Engage in competitive sports and activities ● Lead healthy, active lives ● Have the opportunity to cover each area of the PE curriculum (in their Key Stage) ● By the end of KS2, are ready for the next stage of their PE learning in KS3 ● Learn values such as fairness and respect ● Build confidence and resilience We deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities within PE. In EYFS, KS1 and KS2, the children have at least two high-quality PE lessons a week which follows St Philip’s personalised scheme of work and subsequent lesson plans which allows our children to access a clear progression of knowledge and skills as they progress through school Lessons are delivered by teaching staff and external agencies (Prestige Sports Coaching and Life Leisure) who support in the teaching of the curriculum to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities within PE and provide essential CPD for all our staff. Inclusion At St Philip’s, we believe that all children should receive opportunities to develop as athletes, regardless of their barriers to learning. We use adaptive teaching in our PE lessons, ensuring that all children can achieve successes in their sporting journey. This is achieved through strategies such as adapting equipment e.g. ball or target size. In PE sessions, activities are planned so they can be adapted so that perceptions of success and failure are not conditioned solely by simple win or lose criteria but instead emphasise goals that are achievable for every pupil, allowing each child to challenge and push themselves within their own physical boundaries. The ethos is that success is about individual progress and sheer enjoyment as well as winning. What you would see in a PE lesson: ● A consistent approach of an introduction to the lesson, a warm-up, new knowledge introduced, skill development/application of knowledge and a plenary ● An opportunity for collaboration and partner/team discussion ● Opportunities for the children to work independently and collaboratively ● Opportunities for the children to perform their acquired skills and knowledge ● Opportunities for feedback from other children and the teacher ● Sport/activity specific vocabulary that builds on the children’s previous learning ● Taught skills that lead to level 1 competitions. ● A clear progression in knowledge and skills from one-year group to the next |
Impact | The learning objectives are shared with the children and at the beginning of each session. In every PE session, children receive specific feedback on where they are in their learning journey. This includes a lot of verbal discussion and live feedback from the teacher/ coach in order for children to develop factual knowledge and then be able to apply the knowledge they have learnt. We encourage children to evaluate their own and other people’s performance giving and receiving positive critical feedback to improve. Coaches select a star of the session for each year group who have been demonstrating our school values of rejoice, resilience and respect. Class teachers track attainment at the end of each unit, logging development against the factual knowledge and application knowledge statements. They list children who have exceeded these statements, signposting them to an after school or local club and a list of children who have not met the expected standard and adaptive teaching can be put into place. |
Enrichment | At St Philip’s we don’t just believe in offering our children high quality PE sessions but we also provide them with a multiple of opportunities to participate in sport experiences outside the classroom and expand their skills further. Our Year 6 children are all part of the Play leaders programme. This is an excellent opportunity for them to develop their leadership skills. Year 6 work in small groups to plan and deliver small sided games on the playground at lunchtime. They set up the games, explain rules to the children, referee the games and inspire our younger children to be active. At St Philip’s we provide a wealth of after school and lunch time sport clubs. At lunchtime, PSC and members of staff run clubs which prepare our children for Level 2 competitions that we participate in. We also run focused sports clubs that run throughout the year. These include football, netball and dodgeball clubs. Children engage in forest school where they will complete orienteering sessions throughout the year. We are part of the Stockport Alliance and participate in Level 2 competitions throughout the year. We also participate in local Football tournaments and arrange Friendly matches against local schools. We have been very successful getting into many finals like Gymnastics, Hockey and Dodgeball. One of the children’s favourite events of the year is Sports Week. This happens every year when they return after the May half term. The children are off timetable for the whole week and the week is packed with a range of different sports to try. Local Sport Clubs are invited to coach sessions and we provide children with unique sporting activities that they may have not tried before. We have had a variety of activities on offer such as skateboarding, scootering, rock climbing, mini trampolining and many more. |
