Sensory and Physical

What is Sensory and Physical?

At St Philip's Catholic Primary School, we understand that only when a child's physical and sensory needs are being meet are they able to access their learning.

In each individual situation, we work with families and their child, looking at the best approaches in order to access learning and thrive.

We take advice from Stockport's Occupational Therapy team and support a range of sensory and physical needs, including fine and gross motor skills. Many of our teaching strategies and activities can be used in the classroom as part of daily classroom support and meet children's physical and sensory needs. If we feel that a child has difficulties carrying out practical and physical activities which affect their daily life, then a referral to the Occupational Therapy Service may be required. The service may assess and give school and parents recommendations and advice or produce a program specific to the child's needs.

As stated in the SEND Code of Practice 2015:

6.34 Some children and young people require special educational provision because they have a disability which prevents or hinders them from making use of the educational facilities generally provided. These difficulties can be age related and may fluctuate over time. Many children and young people with vision impairment (VI), hearing impairment (HI) or a multi-sensory impairment (MSI) will require specialist support and/or equipment to access their learning, or habilitation support. Children and young people with an MSI have a combination of vision and hearing difficulties. “

This area includes children with hearing impairment, visual impairment, multi-sensory impairment and physical difficulties.
